Travel with us to the Philippines, where a young girl takes up her grandfather’s lifelong pursuit of protecting an endangered coral reef. Inspired by true stories, this virtual reality experience will take you diving on some of the world’s most beautiful reefs. Watch it now on National Geographic!

For a better viewing experience, watch in a VR headset using the YouTube app.

Grandpa’s Reef was developed as part of a 60-minute educational activity for middle and high schools students. Watch their reactions below. Scroll down to download the lesson plan for your students.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY

Virtual reality has the power to create emotional connections and can influence attitudes and behaviors. Paired with a design thinking activity, we created a 60-minute hands-on, interactive workshop in which students brainstorm solutions to address environmental problems in their community.

Drawing from the animals in the VR experience, they will learn about plastic-related issues and their impact on these animals. Working in small groups or individually, they will brainstorm, create,  and present their ideas to reduce plastic pollution and its impact on our oceans.

The program has proven to be an effective way to inspire and excite, but also instill a sense of power, ownership, and responsibility in their community. Download the lesson plan and activity materials below:
